the Thames Sailing Club is owned and
operated by Brian Johncey trading as Blue Chip SUP. Blue Chip SUP
Training Centre trains SUP instructors as part of British
Canoeing Discipline Support Module for SUP at our water based
centre (Thames Sailing Club)

British
Canoeing
is the National Governing Body
(NGB)
for paddle sports in the UK
The British Canoeing
SUP Discipline Support Module is designed to
assist anyone who wants to gain more knowledge
about the specialist discipline of SUP. The
course introduces and explains the basic
techniques and strategies for working with SUPs.
The course is a mix of theory and practical
activity to ensure everyone has time to try
things out.

Prerequisites:
-
The course is designed for
experienced SUP paddlers,
BC coaches and leaders (or aspiring
coaches/leaders) ; candidates will be expected to demonstrate
a good level of competence on a board in at least the following SUP skills:
- Key elements of efficient and effective SUP paddling.
- Prone paddling
- Kneeling and Standing
- Trim, edge and balance
- Efficient forward bi-lateral paddling
- Moving sideways -sculling
- Steering –cross bow strokes
- Turning – Step back pivot and sweeps
- Towing methods

Aspiring candidates are advised to have a
valid First Aid endorsement prior to
attending this course as/span> this will be
required prior to delivering any SUP
introduction courses

Overview

- Provide a background to the various disciplines within SUP.
- Introduce different
types of equipment including the issues of
equipment design, size and modification to suit all individual requirements.
- Introduce and develop the knowledge of SUP specific techniques and tactics
- Explore some SUP safety and rescue specifics
- To organise and safely run
an introduction to SUP session
in the sheltered water environment.

includes both practical and theory sessions as
detailed below.
- Theory sessions should be
embedded with practical examples where
appropriate.

HoursLearning Outcomes
By the end of this
module participants should be able to:
- Understand the worldwide development of the sport and the role of the various bodies on the field including British Canoeing, Academy of Surfing Instructors
(ASI), British Stand Up Paddleboard Association (BSUPA), Sport England and Adventure Activities Licencing Service (AALS).
- Understand equipment design, size and modification to suit individual requirements.
- Provide a background to the various disciplines within SUP paddling and the specific techniques that apply to each.
- Understand the different types of board available, their characteristics and the different techniques used on them.
- Understanding of handling an SUP efficiently

to SUP session in the sheltered water

the module candidates receive a certificate of
attendance from their Home Nation
- British Canoeing Member
certificate cost is £17.50

style Blue Chip SUP instructor ID card

Is this SUP Instructor course suitable for
you
This course is not designed for beginners, we
will NOT be teaching you how to paddle.
During
the course, you will be asked to demonstrate a
good level of competence on your board in at
least the following SUP skills:
- Key elements of efficient and effective SUP paddling.
- Prone paddling
- Kneeling and Standing
- Trim, edge and balance
- Efficient forward bi-lateral paddling
- Moving sideways -sculling
- Steering –cross bow strokes
- Turning – Step back pivot and sweeps
SUP rescue
You will be
spending time in the water during the "on
the water session" which will include
technique instruction on:
- Towing methods
- Recovering a paddler back onto their board
- Removal of an unresponsive paddler from the water
- Swimmer recovery
- Games applicable to skill development on an SUP
If you are not a competent paddler and
unable to demonstrate these basic paddling
skills during the course, then you will not
be able to teach SUP beginners how to paddle
and this course may not be for you.
