Temporary Repairs on Sails |
|
|
Small tears in monofilm panels are
the most common type of sail damage. You can make good temporary
repairs on any monofilm panel if the tear is no longer than say
20 cm and is a minimum of 2 cm away from any seam. Cut
the Blue Chip Mylar Repair Tape with radius corners to over hang the damaged area by
a minimum of 2 cm all around. Apply the Blue Chip Mylar Repair Tape to both sides of
the dry sail. This type of repair can last a very long time.
Larger tears can be temporarily fixed in this manner. However
this will be strictly temporary. Extended use of a sail with
a large tear usual leads to much more severe damage! In either
case you should seek our professional advice as soon as possible.
Our advice costs nothing and could save your sail !

DIY "Heat-Set" Repair Tapes |
|
Luff tubes;
Small tears in the luff tub (up to about 2 cm)
can sometimes be left for years without getting worse, however, if you feel
that it needs a simple and small repair, this is how to do it yourself. Small rips in the luff tube (up to about 5cm)
can probably be repaired satisfactorily with our heat-set adhesive Dacron repair
tape. We can supply this in most colours to give a suitable finish.
Spinnakers;
Small rips in a spinnaker (up to about 5cm)
can probably be repaired satisfactorily with our heat-set adhesive Light weight Spinnaker repair tape. We can supply this in most colours to give a suitable finish.
Dinghy sails;
Small rips in a Dinghy sail (up to about 5cm) can probably be repaired
satisfactorily with our heat-set adhesive Dacron sail repair tape. We can
supply this in most colours to give a suitable finish.
Kites;
Small rips in a kite (up to about 5cm)
can probably be repaired satisfactorily with our heat-set adhesive Light weight kite repair tape. We can supply this in most colours to give a suitable finish.
Instructions for heat set tapes:
Clean the damaged area with fresh water and
thoroughly
dry. Cut the repair tape with radius corners to over hang the damaged area by
a minimum of 2 cm all around. Apply the repair tape to both sides (if
possible) of
the dry sail, then use a domestic iron
(temperature adjusted to Nylon) to set the
adhesive. This type of repair can last a very long time.
Larger tears can be temporarily fixed in this manner. However
this will be strictly temporary. Extended use of a sail with
a large tear usual leads to much more severe damage! In either
case you should seek our professional advice as soon as possible.
